Clever Storage Solutions: How Bespoke Joinery Can Transform Your Home

When designing a home, storage is often one of the biggest considerations for our clients. It needs to be practical, functional and able to work seamlessly with the way you live, but that doesn’t mean it should compromise on the overall design of a space.

The most successful storage solutions are often the ones you don’t immediately notice. Thoughtfully designed joinery has the ability to blend into a room, creating a sense of calm and order, while quietly providing the functionality that every home needs.

At Wells and Maguire, we believe bespoke joinery is not just about adding cupboards or shelving; it is about creating considered solutions that enhance the architecture of a space and make everyday living feel effortless.

Making the most of every space

One of the greatest benefits of bespoke joinery is the ability to utilise areas that may otherwise be overlooked. Awkward corners, unused alcoves and areas beneath windows can all become valuable opportunities for clever storage.

A beautifully designed window seat is a perfect example of this. Not only does it create a cosy and inviting place to sit, read or relax, but it can also incorporate hidden storage beneath. Whether used for blankets, children’s toys, books or everyday items that you want close at hand but out of sight, concealed storage helps maintain a beautifully considered and clutter-free home.

The beauty of these solutions is that they feel like they have always belonged within the space. Rather than adding furniture pieces, joinery becomes part of the architecture of the room.

Concealed, but practical: hiding radiators within joinery

Radiators are an essential part of any home, but they can sometimes interrupt the flow of a beautifully designed room. One clever way to overcome this is by incorporating them into bespoke joinery.

A recent example we love is a built-in bench seat with the radiator concealed behind the joinery. By introducing carefully positioned grills within the top of the bench, heat is still able to circulate effectively while the radiator itself remains hidden from view.

We carried out the same process on a previous project, where the client’s wanted to maximise the available space without having to relocate existing radiators. This approach allows the room to feel more streamlined and intentional, without compromising on practicality. It is a great example of how thoughtful design can solve everyday challenges while creating something visually beautiful.

A considered focal point: bespoke TV joinery

Television storage is another area where bespoke joinery can completely transform the way a room feels. Rather than allowing a television to become a standalone feature within a space, a carefully designed joinery piece can help it feel integrated into the overall design of the room.

A bespoke TV unit can provide valuable storage for family essentials, from books and board games to media equipment and everyday items, helping to keep the space organised while maintaining a calm and considered aesthetic. Open shelving can be used to display treasured pieces, artwork and accessories, adding personality and warmth while creating a focal point that feels intentional.

By combining practical storage with thoughtful detailing, materials and styling, TV joinery has the ability to elevate a room beyond simply housing technology. It can create a beautiful backdrop for everyday living, enhancing the atmosphere of the space while ensuring the television feels like a natural part of the interior rather than an afterthought.

Creating homes that work harder

Good storage is not about filling a room with cupboards; it is about understanding how a space is used and designing solutions around your lifestyle.

From hidden compartments and window seats to full-height cabinetry and bespoke shelving, joinery allows every detail of a home to be carefully considered. It creates spaces that feel calmer, more organised and ultimately more enjoyable to live in.

The most successful interiors are those where design and function work together effortlessly. Clever joinery allows us to achieve exactly that – creating homes that are not only beautiful to look at, but also designed around the people who live there.

At Wells & Maguire, we love creating interiors where every element has a purpose, and where even the smallest details contribute to a home that feels truly considered.
