There are projects that stay with you long after completion. This is one of them.
When our clients came to us with a Victorian property in South Wales, they had a clear vision, a home that had been fully considered from top to bottom, with a master suite that went far beyond the expected. What they wanted was not simply a beautiful bedroom and bathroom, they wanted a private retreat. A space where the demands of daily life could genuinely be left at the door.
What followed was one of our most rewarding and thoughtfully resolved projects to date.
The brief
The starting point was a pair of existing bedrooms on the upper floor. The brief was to combine them entirely, creating a large and considered master suite comprising a generous bedroom, a dedicated dressing room, and a master ensuite that would function as a true wellness space, complete with a freestanding bath, a walk-in shower, and a traditional timber sauna.
For our clients, the inclusion of a sauna was not a luxury addition as an afterthought. It was central to the brief from the very beginning. They understood the benefits of regular sauna use, for rest, for recovery, and overall wellbeing, and they wanted that experience to be woven seamlessly into their daily routine, accessible from the comfort of their own home.
The design
Our approach was to create a space that felt calm, considered, and spa-like in atmosphere, without ever losing the warmth and character of the Victorian architecture it sits within. The two disciplines, the elegance of a period home and the clean tranquillity of a wellness retreat, are not always easy to reconcile. Here, we feel they coexist beautifully.
The ensuite is entered through a pair of full-height double doors directly from the bedroom, a detail that felt important from the outset. The transition from sleeping space to bathing space should feel deliberate and considered, and those doors achieve exactly that. They also allow the room to be fully open, creating a generous sense of flow between the two spaces, or entirely private when required.
At the heart of the ensuite sits a freestanding bath, positioned centrally and finished with brushed bronze fittings that run consistently throughout the space. Above it, a statement chandelier adds a sense of occasion, a deliberate contrast to the natural materials elsewhere in the room, and a nod to the grandeur of the original property.
The traditional timber sauna occupies its own dedicated space between the enclosed WC and the walk-in shower enclosure. Set behind a full-height glazed door, the warm grain of the natural timber is visible from across the room, grounding the palette and introducing an organic quality that balances the cooler tones of the Calacatta marble. It feels intentional and integrated, never added on.
Throughout the ensuite and into the bedroom beyond, wall panelling in a transitional style ties the spaces together, honouring the period bones of the house while sitting comfortably within the refined, contemporary aesthetic of the overall design.
The result
What our clients now have is a master suite that genuinely supports the way they live. Not simply a beautiful space, though it is undeniably that, but a considered, functional environment designed around their routines, their values, and their sense of what home should feel like.
The sauna is used daily. The bath is a ritual. The dressing room flows. And the double doors between bedroom and ensuite remain, more often than not, open wide.
This is what we mean when we talk about design for real life. Not interiors that exist to be admired, but spaces that are lived in fully, and that make life feel, in every sense, a little more beautiful.
